Beloved, if you don’t already have one, know this: getting an emergency fund is an EMERGENCY.
When I learned this by reading Dave Ramsey’s book The Total Money Makeover, I decided I HAD to have some cash standing between me and disaster. So I pulled out all the stops, praying as I went. I sacrificed a lot of stuff–pawning it, selling it, returning it, whatever–and did everything I could.
A few weeks later, I had my first $1,000 emergency fund. It was the first $1,000 I had ever seen in my life. (Read the whole story here.)
When that $1,000 emergency fund was completed, it was a transformational moment in my life.
I had never had any savings before that point. No stockpile of cash at all. I was always living on ramen noodles, macaroni and cheese, and spaghetti. I remember having to calculate how many boxes of $0.97 spaghetti I could afford to purchase from Wal-Mart in order to have food to last the rest of the week until I got paid.
I was flat broke, y’all.
But you know what? When I heard about how I too could get an emergency fund, the excitement of the Lord rose up in my spirit. I determined that I too would have savings; and, a few weeks later, I did. God’s supernatural energy came up under me to make it happen, but I had to put legs on it. I’m the one that had to cooperate with Him in order to realize the dream. And you’re going to have to do the same thing.
Even if you’re flat broke now, you can save up an emergency fund–but you’re going to have to put legs to it. You’re going to have to make it happen. Yes, God will help you … but you’re going to have to go after it.
You can do it.
